The bill already looks to be in grave danger: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs 50 of the 52 Senate Republicans to back the plan, under the special procedural rules Republicans are using to pass the bill with a bare majority and avoid a Democratic filibuster.

The health care reform bill, a central campaign pledge by President Donald Trump and many of his fellow Republicans, has already neared collapse, with two Republicans publicly opposing it. Paul says the bill does not repeal enough of Obamacare and that it creates a "giant insurance bailout superfund" for health insurance companies. In the meantime, Cheryl and I extend our best wishes to John, Cindy and the entire McCain family and pray for his speedy recovery. But he will be staying in Arizona next week to recover on the advice of his doctors.

A statement released by Mr. McCain's office on Saturday had suggested that he would be in Arizona recovering for just this week, but neurosurgeons interviewed said the typical recovery period could be longer.

Responding to the issue, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement late Saturday that the Senate will defer consideration of the health care bill.

"The Senator is resting comfortably at home and is in good condition. But I think - I think I fear that it's going to fail", McCain said.

The Kentucky Republican's new legislation changes how much money states that expanded their Medicaid programs for the poor last year would get.

McCain, 80, who spent six years as a prisoner of war in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War, is the senior U.S. Senator from Arizona and serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The GOP also inserted a provision into the latest bill that would exempt members of Congress and their staffs from no longer receiving essential health benefits. That passed in the House of Representatives unanimously. John McCain's announced absence following surgery left Republicans short of votes on their marquee legislation.

If approved, the Republican healthcare bill would repeal most of the taxes that paid for Obamacare, except for two placed on high earners.

The hospital said tissue pathology reports would be available within the next several days.

Doctors ordered a week of rest, the statement from McCain's office said.
