Sanctions were not discussed at my meeting with President Putin. In their communiqué, the leaders said they agreed to "fight protectionism".

President Trump's schedule on the last day of the summit included a series of meetings on the sidelines with the leaders of Britain, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and China.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Trump's refusal to sign on to the statement was "regrettable". "Bravo", the U.S. leader said.

German officials had expected 100,000 protesters Saturday on the streets of Hamburg.

Merkel made efforts to explain after the summit that she did not broker a watered-down G-20 resolution full of concessions to Trump, even though the document mentions that his view on climate policy differs from other leaders'. Trump has criticized the Chinese leadership for failing to use its influence on the otherwise isolated North and getting it to stop its missile tests. His tweet about Podesta prompted the former top White House aide, who was driving with his wife on a cross-country trip, to respond that the president was a "whack job".

The official said Trump and Xi talked about ways to "deal with North Korea together".

Trump's private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin stole the show at the G-20.

The Russians denied any interference in the U.S. electoral process.

President Trump said Sunday he did not discuss sanctions during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit. "That's it", said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

U.S. officials have not confirmed Lavrov's characterization of President Trump's response to Putin.

The meeting is likely to bring returns for Putin at home.

But Trump's relationship with European leaders is still tense.

Whether the meeting represents similar gains for President Trump remains a question.

Trump said that Putin "vehemently denied" the conclusions of American intelligence agencies that Russian hackers and propagandists tried to sway the election in Trump's favor.

"There is no country that could possibly be closer than our countries and for a long time", Trump said. French President Emmanuel Macron, who will host Trump on a quick trip to Paris this week declared: "There are major differences, growing differences between major powers".

"Nothing will be done until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved!" he added.
